In the summer of 1961 LIFE Magazine sent well-known photographer Dmitri Kessel to photograph the Taylor family at their cabin in Wyoming. The photos are an extraordinarily charming look at a man at peace with himself. After a turbulent marriage to Barbara Stanwyck, he was reluctant to remarry. Ms. Thiess described him as having an “emotional limp” when it came to marriage. However, they did marry in May 1954 and had two children Terry, born in 1955 and Tessa, born in 1959. It’s so good to see this fine man enjoying life at 50. LIFE allows the reproduction of photos for personal, non-commercial use.
Robert Taylor, Ursula Thiess, Tessa Taylor and Terry Taylor relax at their home in Wyoming 1961. In 1963 the owner of the land, Clarence Tarbet, died and the land become a state park. The Taylors were not warned about this. Mr. Taylor was angry at the discourtesy and left immediately without many of their possessions. The Taylors loved riding. Ursula once rode through a wildfire to get to her home. (Ursula Thiess, “….but I have promises to keep, Xlibris Press, 2007, pp. 143-144.)
Thank you once again Judith, such a lovely insight to their escape to their Wyoming retreat. Such lovely informal photos.

Thanks Judith for posting these again. Such a beautiful pleasure to view them again and so appreciated as as the family valued their privacy, with limited access for family photos.

It’s so great that Mr. Taylor found happiness with his family in his later years. It’s also such a tragedy that he didn’t get to enjoy them longer. I’m glad you enjoy the photos. Thanks for writing. Judith

Did the daughter ever take up acting like her parents? Where is she now?

I don’t think she has done any acting, but I could be wrong. She is very beautiful and has done at least some modeling. She lives in Washington State and is active in environmental and charitable causes.
