I became a Robert Taylor fan at the age of 15 when his TV show, "The Detectives" premiered. My mother wanted to watch it because she remembered Mr. Taylor from the thirties. I took one look and that was it. I spent the rest of my high school career watching Robert Taylor movies on late night TV, buying photos of him, making scrapbooks and being a typical teenager. College, marriage and career intervened. I remember being sad when Mr. Taylor died. I mailed two huge scrapbooks to Ursula Thiess. I hope she got them. Time passed, retirement, moving to Florida. Then in 2012 my husband Fred pointed that there were two Robert Taylor movies that evening on Turner Classic Movies--"Ivanhoe" and "Quentin Durward." I watched both and it happened all over again. I started this blog both for fans and for people who didn't know about Robert Taylor. As the blog passes 200,000 views I'm delighted that so many people have come by and hope it will help preserve the legacy of this fine actor and equally good man.

    Jeez, this is a hard poll for me to vote! To begin with, I always found quite unfair that Bob wasn’t even nominated for “The Last Hunt”, perhaps his most demanding character of all since it was the perfect opposite to his real life personality. But he also excels in “Bataan” and “Above and Beyond” where the line of duty is the common thread of both actual fact-based stories. I have the fondest memories of “High Wall” because it really was the film that hooked me on RT movies, 20 years ago. His character is fascinating in this film-noir (largely overlooked) gem and I’m glad you brought “High Wall” up to this poll. Although he was very good in “Devil’s Doorway” and “Quo Vadis”, I’m not sure these would have earned Bob an Oscar. Unfortunately, the release of the former was ill-timed and it just died out at the box-office. I think “Devil’s Doorway” was valued only when it was rerun on TV… several decades later! As for “Quo Vadis”, sure I enjoy it, but I admit it isn’t one of Bob’s best performances. In my opinion, it is Peter Ustinov who steals the movie through and through, and the Oscar should have gone to him. I could name other Oscar-deserving roles concerning Bob, but there’s, however, one film missing in this poll—“Johnny Tiger” (1966). Did you see it?

      Hi.  No I haven’t seen “Johnny Tiger.”  I would love to but it seems to be made of unobtanium.  Totally agree with you about “High Wall.”  It’s probably my favorite.  I do have a weakness for “Quo Vadis” since I love Roman stories.  The number of films I could incIude here was limited but people can add their own ideas–“Johnny Eager” is another great one. Thanks for writing.
